Before the advent of modern medicine as we know it many cultures developed natural medicines called herbs. These cures usually came from plants and other natural substances which today can often be found in the kitchen.
 
Ayurvedic Medicine is a tradition of treating people holistically that has a history of treating disease and preventing illness through herbs and even some of your every day spices found in the kitchen.
 
A number of Indian plants or herbs and spices have found their way into the United States. Ginger, Gotu Kola, Gymnema, Cinnamon, Boswellia or Frankincense and East Indian Globe Thistle are just a few of the Indian herbs that can be found in your local herbalist store or even at the grocery store.
 
Ginger
used as a digestive aid this spice has been recommended to cure gas, colic and even decrease heart burn. It is also known as a tonic to increase vigor and as an anti-depressant. In India this herb is also known as Sunthi or Adrak
 
Gotu Kola
Listed as a common herb in India this herb should not be confused with Kola Nut which is a different plant. In Ayurvedic herbalism this plant has many uses including wound healing, skin disorders, sedative effects and even seems promising as a blood pressure lowering herb.
 
Gymnema
Gymnema Sylvestre or Gurmar has received a lot of press because it appears to block sugars. The first noticeable effect when a small amount is placed on the tongue is that the person stops being able to taste sweets. The theory is that it has a similar blocking effect internally. The actual effect may be that because you don't "taste" the sugar it doesn't trigger that "sweet tooth effect". When used with diabetics a decrease in blood sugar and insulin levels was noted with this Indian herb.
 
Cinnamon
In addition to being a key ingredient in mom's cinnamon rolls this spice has been used as a stimulant for hundreds of years by the Ayurvedic Herbalist. It is used commonly to alleviate tooth ache, rheumatism and as an astringent. The essential oil seems to have marked anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties also.
 
Boswellia
Also known as Frankincense this gummy residue is used externally for its anti-inflammatory properties and as an expectorant and immune system booster when taken internally. This tree is native to India and the Middle East.
 
East India Globe Thistle
considered a tonic or energizer this herb also seems to have anti-diabetic qualities and may be found in compounds that promote anti-oxidant effects or that reduce blood sugar.
 
The list of Ayurvedic herbs is much longer than just these few. It is noteworthy that many of these herbs are also spices or foods such as apricot or licorice. The Ayurvedic tradition promotes the belief that food plays an important role in curing disease and promoting wellness. The precept that "we are what we eat" is not a new one it seems.
 
Taking herbs in place of medications is not without some risk. Many herbs contain potent substances which can create side effects as well as interactions with medications.
 
A common example is ginseng. Ginseng interacts with coumadin (a common blood thinner) and causes your blood to become even thinner.

Growing Herbs Indoors Year Round

When it is cold outside, most people do not  want to go out to try to garden. But  even though it is cold, people still want to garden all the same. This is one reason why indoor gardening has  become so popular. Plants that are  fairly easy to grow successfully indoors are herbs.

 

Not only beautiful to look at and fragrant,  you can also eat them. Give year-round  indoor herb gardening a try, and you will be hooked.

 

You can either start your herbs from seed  or purchase plant starts at a nursery, or even hardware and grocery stores in  season. Starting seeds is very cost  effective, and you have a much wider selection of varieties from which to  choose, but it does take longer to get from a seed to an edible plant. If you want to enjoy your plants sooner, then  look for plant starts instead.


Some herbs can grow in a sunny window with  just the natural light that is available.  Herbs like mint, rosemary and oregano work well in this type of  light. However, if you wish to grow  plants like basil or cilantro, then you will need to make sure that you give  them extra artificial light, or they will not survive in the lower-light  levels.

There are a couple of different options for  lighting herbs with artificial light.  Fluorescent grow lights can work well for this purpose, as can metal  halide HID lamps. Other specific types include solarmax grow lamps, chrome dome grow lights and hortilux grow lights. Both fluorescent and HID types of light  offer the blue color spectrum needed for early plant growth, and the red and  orange spectrum, which plants need to flower properly. Both types of lights require electrical  ballasts or digital ballasts to control the flow of the electrical current in  the bulb, and they can be included inside the light fixture or they can be a  separate component used in conjunction with the light bulb and light fixture.

Herbs can be annuals, biennials or  perennials. Annuals complete their  entire life cycle of germination, growth and reproduction in one year, whereas  perennials will live for many years and repeat their life cycle. Biennials live for two seasons, where they  grow in the first and bloom in the second.  To help you decide which ones to grow, think about the types of foods  you enjoy cooking, and what types of herbs you typically use to flavor them as  a good way to start. Some herbs are  fairly easy to grow, including annual basil, dill and summer savory. Parsley is a biennial, and also easy to  grow. Beginners also usually have good  luck growing perennial mint, thyme, winter savory, marjoram and chives indoors. The perennial herbs can survive for several  years, and they like to go outside in the summer if possible.

Bathing With Essential Oils From Herbs

Bath is calming way to relax in today's fast paced stressful life. It is a soothing way to start a new day and blissful send-off to bed. Herbs and its essential oils soothes aching muscles, tense nerves, skin irritations, softens skin and ensures peaches and roses complexion.

Set the stage for your bath with a clean fresh bathroom. Keep clean towels, bath gels, herbs, loofah, etc handy. Choose relaxing music, light aromatic candles around you. All in all make sure that everything you need for your luxury is within arms reach.

 

While filling tub with warm water, create a bag of your favourite herbs to be used in bathing. It is ideal that you give your skin a quick loofah brush head to toe before you start. To create an herb bag, fill muslin cloth or even an old stocking with your favourite herbs. Dip it in your bath, letting the herbs gently soak in the water. Bath salts, citrus leaves, dried rose petals, dried lavender flowers to name a few to create an herb bag. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, once said: "Let food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food." Food therapy is the foundation of Chinese medicine.

 

For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has focused on food cures.

 

One of the major differences between Chinese medicine and Western medicine with regard to food therapy is that the former uses diet to prevent and cure illness, while the latter seldom uses foods for symptomatic treatment of disease, other than using diet exclusively for treating obesity problems.

 

Another major difference is that Chinese medicine takes into consideration not just the nutrients of foods, such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, but also the flavors, the energies, and the movements of foods in relation to different body organs.

 

In Chinese medicine, foods have five flavors: bitter, pungent, salty, sour, and sweet. Flavors in foods don't just give you the taste: they have an impact on your internal organs.

 

Foods with bitter taste, such as bitter melon (Chinese vegetable), lettuce, and radish, affect your heart and small intestine. Such foods reduce your body heat and dry your body fluids.

 

This explains why herbs used to treat fever and diarrhea always taste bitter because of their "drying" effect.

 

Foods, such as chive, clove, coriander, ginger, parsley and peppermint, have a pungent flavor, which acts on your lungs and large intestine. Foods with pungent flavor induce perspiration and promote energy circulation.

 

Foods with salty flavor, such as salt, kelp, and seaweed, affect your kidneys and bladder. Salty foods can soften hardness, and therefore they are ideal for treating symptoms involving the hardening of muscles.

 

Foods, which are sour in taste, such as mango, lemon, pear, and plum, affect your liver and gall bladder. Such foods obstruct movements, and are therefore ideal for treating diarrhea and controlling excessive sweating.

 

Foods with a sweet flavor are sugar, banana, beef, chestnut, and watermelon, and they affect your stomach and spleen. These foods slow down acute symptoms and neutralize the toxic effects from other foods. In Western medicine, sweet foods make you gain weight because they are often loaded with "empty calories." From the perspective of Chinese medicine, sweet foods affect your stomach and spleen, weakening your digestive functions, and therefore making you eat more and gain more.

 

It should be noted that some foods have more than one flavor, and this is not uncommon. Beef is sweet, while pork is both salty and sweet.

 

According to Chinese medicine, foods are also considered for their energies because they generate heat or cold; that is to say, they give sensation of heat or cold to the human body. For example, if you drink a glass of cold water, you body feels cold; but that sensation is only temporary, while the sensations from foods are more lasting.

 

The foods, whether they are hot or cold, have a more lasting sensation on your body. Foods have five energies: hot, cold, warm, cool, and neutral. Tea, for example, gives cold energy, even if it is hot tea. Pepper provides hot energy, even if it is chilled. Chicken gives warm energy, and corn has neutral energy, that is, neither hot or cold. Accordingly, if your arthritis pain is more acute and severe in cold winter days, then you should take more foods that provide hot or warm energy to reduce the cold in your joints.

 

Furthermore, foods have four movements: the outward movement that induces perspiration and reduces pain; the inward movement that eases bowel movements and abdominal pain; the upward movement that relieves diarrhea; and the downward movement that stops vomiting or asthma.

 

Chinese medicine is based on balance and harmony, in which food therapy plays a pivotal role through its flavors, energies and movements. For thousands of years, the Chinese have used food science for food cures.

Herb Gardening For Beginners

If you’re not the type of person that wants to spend their time managing an elaborate fruit or vegetable garden, you might consider planting and maintaining an herb garden. While the product might not seem as significant, you’ll still enjoy the constant availability of fresh, delicious herbs to flavor your meals with.  First you’ll want to choose the herbs that you’ll plant. You might have a hard time doing this because of the huge scope of herbs  vailable. But the best way to choose is to do what I did; just look at what you have in your kitchen. By planting your own collection of these herbs, you can save money on buying them from the grocery store while having the added benefit of freshness. Some of the herbs you might start with include rosemary, sage, basil, dill, mint, chives, and parsley among others. When choosing an area to put your herb garden, you should remember that the soil should have extremely good drainage. If the dirt gets watered and stays completely saturated, you have no chance of ever growing a healthy plant. One of the best ways to fix the drainage problem is to dig a foot deep in the soil, and put a layer of crushed rocks down before replacing all the soil. This will allow all that water to escape, thus saving your plants.
 
When you are ready to begin planting herbs, you might be tempted to buy the more expensive plants from the store. However, with herbs it is much easier to grow them from seed than it is with other plants. Therefore you can save a bundle of money by sticking with seed packets. Some herbs grow at a dangerously fast rate. For example, if you plant a mint plant in an open space then it will take over your entire garden in a matter of days.
The best way to prevent this problem is to plant the more aggressive plants in pots (with holes in the bottom to allow drainage, of course). When it comes time to harvest the herbs you have laboured so hard over, it can be fatal to your plant to take off too much. If your plant isn’t well established, it isn’t healthy to take any leaves at all, even if it looks
like its not using them. You should wait until your plant has been well established for at least several months before taking off any leaves. This wait will definitely be worth it, because by growing unabated your plant will produce healthily for years to come. Once you’ve harvested your delicious home grown herbs, you’ll want to use them in cooking. Why else would you have grown them? Well first the process begins with drying them out. This is easily achieved by placing them on a cookie sheet and baking them 170 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 4 hours. After they’re sufficiently dried to be used in cooking, you can consult the nearest cookbook for instructions on using them to effectively flavour a dish. If you want to store your herbs for later usage, you should keep them in a
plastic or glass container. Paper or cardboard will not work, because it will absorb the taste of the herbs. During the first few days of storage, you should regularly check the container and see if any moisture has accumulated. If it has, you must remove all the herbs and re-dry them. If moisture is left from the first drying process, it will encourage mildew while you store your herbs. Nobody likes mildew.  So if you enjoy herbs or gardening, or both, then you should probably consider setting up an herb garden. It might require a little bit of work at first to set it up for optimal drainage, and pick what herbs you want to grow. But after the initial hassle, it’s just a matter of harvesting and drying all your favorite herbs.

Herbs can be used for potpourri, to give food flavor, for medical reasons, for tea, and also to keep pest out of their herb gardens. People create herb gardens to fit one of those uses or they can mix it up and get herbs that serve different purposes. Herbs can be grown in the same garden as other plants are and they can be grown inside in an indoor herb garden.

 

There are several different ways you can grow herbs indoors, like having one inside in your kitchen or having a garden in your windowsill. For a small family, all you need to grow your herbs is four to six feet of earth or a few containers. Even though it is very popular to use herbs as culinary herbs, or herbs used for cooking, some herbs are grown because they smell really good or because they are beautiful.

 

When you plant your herbs indoor, you need to use soil that is well-drained. If the soil you are using is too heavy or is compacted, then you might want to add some organic material to it.

 

You don't need to use fertilizers. Many herbs like the sun, but some will like the shade better. Many herbs will develop well if they have shade in the afternoon.

 

Amazingly, there aren't many insects or diseases that herbs have to worry about. When the weather is hot and dry, you might find red spider mites on plants growing low to the ground and you also might find aphids on the caraway, dill, fennel, or anise.

 

You can purchase herbs and plan them in your indoor herb garden or you can grow them from seeds. It is spectacular and it makes you feel good to see your plant grow from a seed. You will be a part of each step of the seeds growth, from the time it first starts to grow until it dies. It is even more rewarding to grow an herb from a tiny seed than it is to grow other plants because you can use the herb. Most herbs can be grown from seeds.

 

In late winter, you should put your seed in a small box or pot. Make sure to have your herbs grow in soil that is not heavy but well-drained.

 

Because the herb's roots will not go down very far, don't put a lot of soil over your seed. You should plant the seed shallow. Keep this rule in mind: the tinier the seed, the shallower the seed should be.

 

In the spring, you will be able to transplant your herb to the outdoor garden or place them in your windowsill. Even though you can grow your herb from a seed, sometimes you will not be able to transplant them very well. If you are growing herbs like fennel, dill, coriander, or fennel, then you need to plant them in the garden to start with.

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that often affects many of the body's organs. An autoimmune disease, it occurs when the immune

mechanism forms antibodies that attack the body's own tissues. The majority of experts believe that lupus is caused by a virus that has yet to

people who contract lupus are women, with women of Asian background appearing to be at greater risk for developing lupus than other women.

Although lupus may occur at any age, it usually develops between the ages of fifteen and thirty-five. There are two different types of lupus: systemic

lupus erythematosus (SLE) and discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). SLE is a systemic disease that affects many different parts of the body and

severity ranging from mild to life-threatening. The first symptoms in many cases of SLE seem to resemble those of arthritis, with swelling and pain in

the fingers and other joints. The disease can also appear suddenly, with acute fever and the characteristic red rash appearing across the cheeks.

Additionally, there may be red, scaling lesions elsewhere on the body, with sores possibly forming in the mouth. Other symptoms of SLE include

abdominal and chest pains, blood in the urine, fatigue, hair loss, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, nausea, poor circulation in the fingers and toes,

shortness of breath, ulcers, vomiting, and weight loss. Many times, the lungs and kidneys are also involved, as about 50 percent of those with SLE

develop nephritis, which is inflammation of the kidneys. The brain, lungs, spleen, and heart may also be affected in serious cases. Additionally, SLE

can cause excessive bleeding and an increased susceptibility to infection. Amnesia, deep depression, headaches, mania, paralysis, paranoia,

psychosis, seizures, and stroke may also be present if the central nervous system is involved. DLE is a less serious disease, which primarily affects

the skin. The butterfly rash forms over the nose and cheeks, with other possible lesions elsewhere, primarily on the scalp and ears. These lesions,

which are small, yellowish lumps, can recur or persist for years. When they disappear, they often leave scars or permanent bald patches on the scalp.

Although DLE is not necessarily dangerous to overall health, it is a chronic and disfiguring skin disease. Both types of lupus follow a pattern of

periodic flare-ups, with alternating periods of remission. These flare-ups can be caused by the sun's ultraviolet rays, fatigue, pregnancy,

childbirth, infection, some drugs, stress, unidentified viral infections, and chemicals. In order for a diagnosis to be made, the following eight

symptoms have to occur either separately or at the same time: abnormal cells in the urine; arthritis; butterfly rash on the cheeks; low white blood cell

count, low platelet count, or hemolytic anemia; mouth sores; seizures of psychosis; sun sensitivity; and the presence of blood of a specific antibody

that is found in 50 percent of people with lupus. The following nutrients are considered to be extremely important in dealing with lupus: calcium,

magnesium, l-cysteine, proteolytic enzymes (Serrapeptase and nattokinase), essential fatty acids, glucosamine sulfate, garlic, raw thymus glandular,

vitamin C with bioflavonoids, zinc, acidophilus, kelp, a multivitamin and mineral complex, pycnogenol, vitamin A, vitamin E, alfalfa, goldenseal, burdock

root, feverfew, pau d' arco, red clover, licorice root, milk thistle, and yucca. Natural alternatives can help support the body in the fight against

How To Use Natural Herbs For Healing

With cold and flu season coming up, many of us would benefit from using a vapor bath to help open the sinuses and facial pores. To start, place the herbal mixture you have chosen into a pot of boiling water and let it steep (covered) for about 10 minutes.

Make a tent with a towel over your face and neck and put your face down over the uncovered pot. Be careful; you certainly don't want to get scalded! If the steam is too hot, you can wait a short time and try again or add some cold water. Breathe deeply and enjoy!

Adding herbs to your bath water can be therapeutic. Make sure the bath is warm enough to be comfortable (somewhere around 90 degrees is recommended). You can choose sea salt, herbs, or a combination of the two. If you would like to add herbs, one way to introduce them to the water is to hang tea bags under the spout as the water fills up the tub. Herbs can also be added to water for a refreshing foot bath.

When using herbs, it is important to educate yourself about the different properties associated with different kinds, to ensure that you will get the benefit you are seeking from whatever herb or combination you choose.
