Homeopathy - The Miraculous Medicine

By thom namaya

Homeopathy uses minute doses of medicines made from a variety of substances found in the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms. It is a two-hundred year old science founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann; and through a process of rigorous scientific investigations he discovered a law of healing The Law of Similars, that could be used as a guide in treating diseases "like cures like" Similia similibus curentur. Homeopathy is derived from Latin and means "same (homeo) suffering (pathos)." It has been used successfully and safely by millions of people around the world.

It is treating illnesses with remedies that produce effects when taken by people that are similar to the disease itself. For example, a person is cutting an onion, and he/she experiences a watering of the eyes. This like reaction could be a guiding symptom to discerning a remedy for a patient who might need allium cepa as a remedy; a patient with seasonal allergy symptoms. A homeopath would want to know what kind of watering of the eyes: Is it a burning quality? If it is a burning quality, is there a component where it feels like it is acidic? Does it also affect other mucous membranes? Does it elicit any other symptoms? Does it affect other parts of the patient? But the choice of Allium Cepa as a homeopathic remedy must address the physical, emotional, and mental picture of the person. This remedy which most closely matches the person is known as the "similimum" or "most similar remedy." The administration of this very dilute substance stimulates a reaction in the person which can lead to profound healing, and with some patients that match this remedy profile, it has cured lifelong allergies.

What is remarkable is the power of homeopathy to cure not just simple illnesses, but profound and chronic conditions like asthma, migraines, allergies, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and even cancer. There are over 127 quality clinical studies documented in Lancet, Journal of Immunology, British Journal of Homeopathy, and other leading medical journals that validate the efficacy of homeopathy. More importantly is the success and healing that people have experienced with classical homeopathy.

One man came into my office some years back with Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammation of the gut lining. He had this condition for more than fifteen years, and for the past three years had chronic bleeding. He was advised to have part of his intestine removed, and that he would be on steroids for the rest of his life. In three months of working with this man, with the use of a homeopathic remedy and modest changes in his diet, the chronic daily diarrhea and bleeding stopped, and he was back to normal weight; he said, "I never felt better in my life." For the first time in fifteen years he was pain and bleeding free without diarrhea.

A woman came to see me because she was suffering from chronic drug use, major depression, and a history of abusive relationships. In talking with her for over an hour I was able to arrive at a homeopathic prescription, a remedy to help "balance" her. Truthfully, I didn't expect a major change, but she left and visited me again eight months later. "When I saw you I felt like I was the sludge in the sewer, today I feel like the rose growing out of that sludge." Today she is drug free, her depression is gone, and she is living independently. Not just one patient, but many patients with debilitating lifelong illnesses have been able to reclaim their health and well-being with homeopathy.

As a clinician who was initially trained in allopathic/ Western medicine I was initially the greatest skeptic of homeopathy. How is it possible that a tiny bit of a plant or a mineral can cure people of chronic debilitating illness or actually cure allergies? Even in studies that have sought to prove that homeopathy is a placebo, have come to far different conclusions. The Lancet medical journal in their l995 study stated that "Even in comparing and taking into account the role of placebo, we know that there is clear efficacy with homeopathy."

The best proof is for you as a patient. If you have a chronic or an on-going condition and you're searching for a safe and effective treatment, without the harmful side effects of pharmaceuticals, you should consider working with a medically trained and certified classical homeopath.

The Prescription is Joy

By thom namaya

Have we fully considered the consequence of healing that occurs when we aspire to joy?

Joy is the one element of healing that rarely gets mentioned. What I mean by "joy" is a radical aliveness, a vitality and zest for life, and a sense of well-being on physical, mental, and emotional levels.

As a health care provider, you may have pondered the following scenario before: Why is it that when some people are given a diagnosis of terminal cancer, they look into the eyes of death, get up from their bed, and walk the other way? And, why do other patients embrace their fear and fold themselves into the cold embrace of death?

It may be that some are too stubborn to succumb to death, but I suspect the real difference may be the capacity for joy. All of us have seen this at some point or another during our lives. We all know some people who, when they get a common cold, look and act like they are about to make plans for their funerals. Then, we know or hear of others, like Stephen Hawking, PhD, a research scientist and best-selling author who has been called "the greatest mind in physics since Albert Einstein." At 21 years of age, Dr. Hawking was diagnosed with ALS (often referred to as "Lou Gehrig’s disease") and told he had two years to live. More than 20 years later, Dr. Hawking is still very much alive. While it's true that he is bound to a wheelchair, can't talk without the aid of a voice synthesizer, and needs assistance to perform even the simplest of daily tasks (such as brushing his teeth), he nonetheless fully embraces life.

In wholistic medicine, the perspective is to look at the patient's "terrain" or personal environment when devising a care plan. Does the patient have a pleasure and passion for life? Does the patient have a certain zest for living?

An infection or illness can only effectively thrive in a climate that is compromised—or in a person who is susceptible. On a simple level, most people fall prey to a cold or flu when they are fatigued, stressed, or poorly nourished. Although we can alleviate the runny nose or other symptoms, the more fundamental question is this: How do we help the body and the spirit regain balance and vitality? How do we help that person reconnect with joy? The beauty of wholistic modalities such as homeopathy, Aruyvedic, or traditional Chinese medicine is that they do not work against the person, but with the body to restore harmony.

I find that the most effective prescription I can write for my patients is an "Rx for Joy." When a patient embraces life fully and completely, there is less and less space within that person to hold an illness. Illness breeds best in dark and lonely places. When a patient opens the windows of their soul, lets the sun and light in, breathes the air fully, and allows the healing power of life to take hold, that person might find that the illness does not take hold.

I wouldn't spit in the face of death, nor would I shake his hand; instead, if you please, I'll walk the other way. The only true aim of healing is to allow people to more fully experience the joys and pleasures of life. When I hear the song "Joy to the World," it is a reminder to return to a complete state of wellness on all levels: emotional, physical and spiritual.

Walkabout

By thom namaya

A walkabout is a rite of passage, in which the person will go out into the wilderness to discover his or her identity and purpose, and then return home. The walkabout, in this context, is a journey of healing and rediscovering the link between mind, body, and spirit. It is a journey that can help us to reclaim our health and well being. One of the most powerful tools to aid in this transformation is homeopathy.

Homeopathy is a two hundred year old science based on the work of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann who said, "The highest ideal of therapy is to restore health rapidly, gently, permanently: to remove and destroy the whole disease in the shortest, surest, least harmful way according to clearly comprehensible principles." A homeopathic remedy is a specially prepared, minute, quantity from the mineral, animal or plant realm. A well-chosen remedy can help the individual to resolve the illness completely and permanently.

A man came to my office with a severe panic attack and he felt like he was going to die (literally). Though I empathized with his plight, I "welcomed" this so-called panic attack. If I was a traditional provider, I would have written him a prescription for a tranquilizer and had him admitted as an inpatient. What was really happening was a spiritual emergence, his "walkabout." All the suppressed feelings and emotions he had been bottling up, suddenly came to the surface. This was a dying of the past and a birth. I gave him a homeopathic remedy, checked in with him frequently over the next 72 hours, and his family cared for him around the clock. At the end of this initial process, he realized that he had been traumatized years ago, and was only now beginning to recognize this. Oddly enough, over a six month period, many of his chronic illnesses (chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, sinusitis) "miraculously" vanished. Though all of us would like transformation and true healing to be painless and predictable, it rarely is. But the outcome, if we’re lucky, is one beautiful and lovely creation - the return journey to our true self and wellness.

As a medical provider one is inclined to respond to the physical pathology, the boo-boo, but what genuinely ails many is the spiritual and emotional affliction in the disguise of an ailment. It does not mean that the physical problem should be ignored, but that our attention needs to focus on healing the complete person: mind, body, and spirit. A young man came to my office recently for a second opinion, he had "terrible pains in his mid-section and was feeling despondent." He also had a prescription for Zoloft and Pepcid that another provider gave him after a twelve-minute office visit. Unfortunately, the provider hadn’t done any kind of real work-up to determine why he had the pain, or probed into why he was depressed. After I spoke with him for an hour and did a physical, the real answer was apparent: he was very homesick, had spent $18,000.00 to go to a school program that he didn’t want to be in, and wanted to do something else in life. I gave him a single homeopathic remedy that helped to balance him, reduced his distress, and eliminated the "terrible pains." He was able to see the heart of the problem: he needed to follow his own path and not that of his family. The problem wasn’t the stomach pain or the depression, they were symptoms, and the key of it is; that he didn’t believe that he could be his own person and have a destiny apart from his family. What he really needed was a walkabout, a journey of personal discovery, and fortunately the homeopathic remedy helped him enormously on that road.

The walkabout, the journey to healing, can begin now, without ever leaving home. It is as complex and as simple as breathing. Genuine complete healing - looks at the body, mind, and spirit as a seamless interconnected web, and the illness (condition or dis-ease) is interwoven through each strand of that web. The walkabout and the homeopathic therapy, is an opportunity to heal completely and to reclaim our health and well-being.
